How Much Protein Do Women Need? Targets by Age and Goal

Many women under-eat protein, especially at breakfast and when cutting calories. Getting enough supports muscle, bones and fullness, and makes a calorie deficit much easier.

Why it matters more when you're dieting

When you eat less, the body can lose muscle along with fat. Higher protein plus resistance training helps preserve lean mass, which keeps your metabolism and strength up and helps you look "toned" as you lose weight. Protein also keeps hunger in check.

Protein after 50

Around menopause, muscle and bone loss can speed up. Spreading 25–30 g of protein across meals, plus strength training and enough calcium and vitamin D, is commonly recommended. Talk to your doctor about your specific needs.

Easy ways to add protein

  • Breakfast: Greek yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese. See high-protein breakfast.
  • Lunch: add chicken, tuna, tofu or lentils to salads and bowls.
  • Snacks: skyr, string cheese, edamame, a protein shake. See high-protein snacks.
  • Dinner: a palm-to-hand-sized portion of protein.

Will more protein make me "bulky"?

No. Building large muscles takes years of heavy training and a calorie surplus. Higher protein mainly helps you keep muscle and feel full.
